DSIEC DELTA STATE ELECTORAL COMMISION

TAF Africa Evaluates DSIEC Compliance on Disability Inclusion in Delta State Local Government Election. In a press briefing, Mr. Adeolu Kilanko, the program manager of TAF Africa, evaluated the compliance of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) with provisions for assisted voting and the overall experience of voters with disabilities during the local government elections held today.Mr. Kilanko highlighted several critical issues that impede the full participation of persons with disabilities in the electoral process. According to TAF Africa’s observations, these issues include:

  • Delay in Commencement of Voting: Observers reported that voting did not start on time at several polling stations.
  • Low Voter Turnout: The turnout of voters was significantly lower than expected.
  • Poor Communication on New Polling Units: Many voters were unaware of the relocation of polling units, causing confusion and inconvenience.
  • Distance of New Polling Units: Some new polling units were located far from their previous locations, making it difficult for voters with mobility issues to access them.

In a statement by Senior Communication Manager of TAF Africa, Lynn Agwuacha,  TAF Africa outlined these issues and provided recommendations to enhance the inclusivity of future elections. The key recommendations include:

  • Review and Update Guidelines: DSIEC should review and update their guidelines to ensure they are inclusive and accessible.
  • Enhanced Logistics and Early Preparation: Improved logistics and early preparation are necessary to ensure a smooth electoral process.
  • Transparent Communication: Clear and timely communication is essential to inform voters about changes in polling locations and procedures.
  • Inclusive Electoral Process: DSIEC should strive to create an electoral process that is inclusive of all voters, including those with disabilities.
  • Restoring Public Confidence: DSIEC should work to restore public confidence by addressing the issues identified and ensuring that future elections are more inclusive.

She also commended DSIEC for taking prompt action in creating a window for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in their electoral process. However, he emphasized that more needs to be done to ensure full participation and accessibility for all voters.
