Dr Iliyasu Maisanda Receives Lord Mayor’s Medal Alongside Fashion Icon Dame Mary Martins MBE and Community Leaders in Recognition of Service

In a ceremony steeped in civic tradition and celebration, the Chairman of the Commonwealth Association of Nigeria, UK (CANUK), Honourable Dr Iliyasu Maisanda, was among the distinguished recipients honoured today, 9th February 2026, at Westminster City Hall.

The Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster presented a series of commemorative medals to deserving participants and organisers of the spectacular London Parade, which ushered in the New Year on 1st January 2026. The event recognised exceptional contributions to the parade’s success, which showcased vibrant cultural displays and community spirit on the streets of the capital.

Dr Maisanda was recognised for his pivotal role in fostering cross-cultural engagement and ensuring the strong participation of the Nigerian and wider Commonwealth communities in this landmark civic event. His leadership was instrumental in organising one of the parade’s most celebrated contingents, which brought a dynamic fusion of music, dance, and tradition to the heart of London.

He was honoured alongside a cohort of notable figures from arts, public service, and entertainment. The celebrated fashion designer and cultural ambassador, Dame Mary Martins MBE, was recognised for her creative direction and the stunning sartorial presentations that graced the parade. Also receiving medals were Chris Smith of Unison, Westminster, acknowledged for his outstanding work in mobilising community and public service participation, and the renowned director and performer Lee John, celebrated for his artistic coordination and vibrant stage performances that captivated audiences.

The intimate ceremony at City Hall highlighted the collaborative effort required to execute an event of such scale and significance. The Lord Mayor praised the honourees, stating that their dedication and talent were the foundation of a parade that

“not only welcomes the new year but also celebrates the rich tapestry of communities that make Westminster, and London, truly great.”

For Dr Maisanda, the medal serves as a testament to the active and positive role diaspora communities play in UK civic life. “This honour is not merely personal,” he remarked after the ceremony. “It is a recognition of the vibrancy, solidarity, and enduring spirit of the entire community I am privileged to represent. It reaffirms our shared commitment to contributing to the cultural and social fabric of this great city.”

The awards underscore the ongoing importance of community partnership and cultural celebration in fostering unity and pride within one of the world’s most diverse cities.
