Delta State Domestic Staff Service Providers Registration Bill Scales second Reading.

Delta State Domestic Staff Service Providers Registration Bill, 2024 has passed second reading at the State Legislature.

The Lawmakers carefully examined the provisions of the bill during Thursday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Right Honourable Emomotimi Guwor.

Leading the debate on the floor of the house, the majority Leader Honourable Emeka Nwaobi who is the Lead sponsor of the bill, highlighted some of the merits of the bill which seeks amongst other things to address the deficiency in having a data base for domestic staff.

Honourable Nwaobi who represents Aniocha North constituency stated that the bill when passed into law will ensure that the Ministry of Women Affairs has a registry of domestic staff service providers in the State.

The Lawmaker added that the provisions of the bill will no doubt protect the interest of both employers of domestic staff as well as the staff themselves.

Some lawmakers who spoke in support of the bill including Deputy Speaker, Right Honourable Arthur Akpowovwo, Honourables James Augoye, Marilyn Okowa-Daramola, Oboro Preyor, Bridget Anyafulu, Festus Utuama, Oloye Pereotu, Charles Emetulu, Ferguson Onwo and Frank Esenwa in their various submissions hinted on some criminal activities perpetrated by some domestic staff.

The lawmakers also acknowledged the inhumane treatment of some employers to their domestic staff and therefore urged the House to grant speedy passage of the bill which will restore sanity in many homes.

The bill enjoyed a unanimous support through a voice vote as the Speaker, Right Honourable Guwor referred the bill to House Committee on Housing, Women Affairs/Girl Child Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian support Services for further legislative consideration.

Right Honourable Guwor also commended the Lawmakers for their insightful deliberation on the bill which will further strengthen human relations in the society.

The House adjourned plenary to Tuesday 10 September 2024.
